about

Dedicated to Vincent Clive Fariss.

"garden" was composed to celebrate the first year of my son's life. The piece moves very slowly and is very quiet. I first thought of this watching the world go, at what seemed like, a much faster speed as I cared for an infant. Our schedule was different, going much slower, waking up in the middle of the night for feedings, adjusting sleep schedules. I felt we were living in our own private garden. It is still one of the most interesting memories of my life. A garden is used consistently as a metaphor for new life, or life cycles. In the Bible, gardens were places of beauty, shelter, and sustenance. In poetry, they are used to express inspiration, love, family, etc...Many people express their personality through creating their own gardens. It is calming. It can be a therapeutic experience.

The piece is scored for an undectet (an ensemble of 11 players). The challenge was writing a piece of music for that many players that never got loud or chaotic, and flowed at a very slow pace. It is meant to be listened to at a low volume, and drift into the background at times. It is one of my favorite things I have composed (maybe because it was meant as a gift to my first child). It definitely took me the longest amount of time to compose. So it seems appropriate that this recording finally see the light of day on the weekend of my son's 16th birthday! The days are long, but the years are quick.
