about

three swedish folk tales (2018-2019)

Stories of a harrowed journey through unrelenting landscapes, a lone character finds their way through many obstacles. I imagine this as three similar stories occurring in the past, present, and future. Dealing with isolation, adversity, and an existential search to find a “home”. Inspired partly by stories my grandmother told me, and a strange film assembled by Rick Reed about a lonely cosmonaut.

the fog is lifting (2017-2020)

Growing up in Texas, the sound of cicadas has been a constant in my life. I have always been fascinated with the sounds of these insects, and spent over a decade recording them. These strange creatures, with their psychedelic combination tones, have always reminded me of extreme heat, suffocating humidity (aka summer in Texas). Depending on one’s mood, these strange sounds can be a source of comfort (lazy days, sunset, relaxing under trees) or unnerving (intense HEAT, claustrophobia, discomfort). During the late summer of 2012, these sounds are forever burrowed into my mind. My mother was in the final stages of a brutal battle with cancer that had sadly taken just about everything from her. We were in the unfortunate, yet honorable, position of caring for someone in their last days. These days were marked by heat, sadness, large stretches of silence interrupted by these strange creatures, and my father playing the piano (while contemplating the permanence of such a horrible scenario). All of these sounds blurred together and, years later, it still rings in my ears. The title is taken from last words spoken by Emily Dickinson before she died (“I must go in, the fog is rising”). Though the brain tumor had robbed my mother (a very well-spoken, independent woman) of her ability to speak, this line seemed appropriate to the attitude my mother expressed through her eyes and gestures. Brave, aware of the finality, and loving…right to the end.
